No Mail is Good Mail

The week officially ended without the receipt of the dreaded certified letter we were expecting. Keep your fingers crossed and your prayers going up that it wasn't an oversight.

At least one of our friends wasn't so lucky. Fortunately, she has extenuating circumstances that might just keep her out.

The Marines announced last week that 1800 Independent Ready Reservists (what Evan is currently) would be receiving reactivation letters last week. Based on the criteria they outlined, Evan thought there was a pretty good chance he would be one of them. But, no letter. So, it seems we dodged this one.

With these letters, however, it isn't a guarantee that you'll be reactivated. It's orders to report to Kansas City (I think) for an evaluation. They are apparently (if you believe everything the military says) trying not to create hardships for the people recalled. This is why the person we know who received a letter might not actually be reactivated. She's 9 months pregnant at the moment, and will be a single mom. Thus, creating a hardship.

Yeah, we aren't really enjoying the possibility, either. We're just hoping to make it a little longer until Evan reaches his final year of IRR. (They aren't reactivating those in their first or last year.)

okay, so when is that?

Well, his last year officially begins on June 6, 2008, but it's dependent on when they receive their orders. Those being called now wouldn't report until October. So anyone whose last year starts in October should be exempt even though they're getting a a letter now. In fact, it's my understanding that they shouldn't receive a letter at all. That means we really need them to wait about a year before recalling anyone else.
